A review of your records indicates that you have not provided your Social Security Number/Tax Identification Number (TIN) to the University.
Each year, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires colleges and universities to provide tuition expense information to students who may qualify for educational tax credits. This information is provided to students by January 31st of each year via form 1098-T as well as to the IRS. In order for the IRS to match these records to taxpayers who claim educational tax credits, the University of Nevada, Reno must also supply the student SSN or TIN.
Non-Resident Aliens are encouraged to provide a W-8BEN to the educational institution they attend, but it is not required if they have already done so through the Non-Residents Alien Tax Specialist's office. Most nonresident students and scholars cannot claim either the educational credits or interest income and should not receive either a Form 1098-T or a Form 1098-INT. If you are a Non-Resident Alien and have questions, please make an appointment with the NRATS by calling 775/784-1404.
To submit your SSN/TIN, please complete the attached W-9S form and return it to the address below as soon as possible. Failure to submit the required information may result in a penalty levied to you by the IRS, as outlined in the Penalties section of the W-9S form.
